Deebo Samuel is setting the record straight about his weight and conditioning after recent reports raised concerns about his fitness during his time with the San Francisco 49ers.
On Monday, Samuel addressed the speculation head-on, responding to reports that his weight had been an issue last season. Engaging directly with fans on X (formerly Twitter), the veteran wide receiver stated that he currently weighs 225 pounds and made it clear he’s eager for a fresh start with the Washington Commanders, saying he “can’t wait” to get going after his recent trade.
Weight Concerns in San Francisco
The discussion about Samuel’s weight was sparked by Matt Barrows of The Athletic, who reported Monday that the 49ers had tried to keep Samuel at around 220 pounds throughout his tenure in San Francisco.
However, the report suggested that Samuel was significantly over that target in 2024, sometimes weighing in at a number more typical for a starting tight end rather than a dynamic wide receiver.
Barrows cited multiple factors contributing to Samuel’s weight concerns, including a bout with pneumonia and several injuries that limited his ability to maintain peak conditioning. The issue had already become a hot topic among fans and analysts, particularly after a viral photo from Super Bowl week that led many to speculate about his fitness.

Samuel’s 2024 Struggles & Fresh Start in Washington
While Samuel’s weight became a talking point, it was only part of a disappointing 2024 season. He played in 15 games but was limited to 51 catches for 670 yards and three touchdowns, a sharp decline from his previous standout seasons.
With his trade to Washington finalized over the weekend, the Commanders acquired Samuel for a late-round pick, making the move a low-risk, high-reward scenario if he can regain his All-Pro form. If Samuel is truly at 225 pounds and committed to silencing critics, he could quickly emerge as a key playmaker in the Commanders’ offense.
For now, the 28-year-old is motivated to prove doubters wrong and embrace his new opportunity in Washington. If he can stay in shape and return to his explosive self, the 49ers may regret letting him go so cheaply.
