US President Donald Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska and it was a much warmer welcome than people were expecting. One particular gesture has sparked fury
Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin have gathered in Alaska to hash out several heated topics including the Ukraine conflict. The US President is bent on securing a ceasefire and declares he “won’t be happy” if a deal isn’t reached.
But despite these strong statements, everything appeared quite friendly when the two global leaders came together on the tarmac today (August 15). As Putin approached Trump on the red carpet, he was greeted with applause from the 79-year-old American.
The pair exchanged handshakes and strolled toward their transportation vehicles while chatting in a relaxed fashion. They quickly stopped for photographs and seemed to brush off the tough questions being shouted by reporters.
Onlookers are deeply troubled that Putin who has faced accusations of being a ‘war criminal’ received such a cordial reception on US soil.
Some went so far as to say the meeting had nauseated them. One shared a vomiting emoji and commented: “Trump just clapped as Putin was coming towards him, and then they did a lovey dovey smiley handshake.”
Another criticized: “Trump applauded like an exciting school boy, multiple times, as Putin was walking towards him. This is the sickest s*** ever.”
A third observed: “He has zero social etiquette. WTF is he clapping for?” And another chimed in: “Putin wins. He made it to the US. Even got Trump to clap for him. Disgusting.”
Nevertheless, others believed the cordial greeting was simply the most diplomatic approach to take.
A Trump supporter defended the applause, stating: “Because he is in a diplomatic mission, welcoming a head of state, because he hopes to accomplish something good and wants Putin to feel welcome. That is what real leaders and real heads of states do.”
Only time will reveal if this friendly rapport between the world leaders continues.
The meeting was slated to kick off at 11:30am local time and is expected to extend into the evening, with a joint press conference scheduled for later tonight.
While Trump has expressed that a ceasefire in Ukraine is on his agenda, the White House has yet to disclose any specific proposals or whether any progress was made during the private discussions.
